Description
Professionals
who provide services to young adults and adults who are blind and visually
impaired must promote employment as a viable option post-secondary
education. As part of Pre-ETS and the
development of an Individual Plan for Employment, a conversation MUST occur
about the Age-18 re-determination for a student, the work incentives available
from Social Security to encourage employment, and resources available to the
student or adult. Professionals will
most likely increase positive employment outcomes when they themselves can
explain, with a reasonable degree of confidence and competence, the truth about
the impact on SSI/SSDI when working and the work incentives available to
support this outcome.
Primary
Learning Objectives:
- Participants will demonstrate an understanding of the Age 18 Redetermination, the Student Earned Income Exclusion and Blind Work Expenses for SSI beneficiaries to encourage meaningful work during and after secondary education by participating in role plays utilizing scenarios in small groups.
- Participants will utilize https://ky.db101.org/ to set up an account (or sign in if they have one) and complete a calculation for a person who is statutorily blind receiving SSDI and has an offer of employment.
- Participants will utilize https://ky.db101.org/ to complete a calculation for a person who is statutorily blind, receiving SSI and has an offer of employment.
