    Description

    Retinal diseases can permanently impair vision. However, therapeutic approaches are rapidly advancing to help prevent vision loss. Over the past decade, great progress has been made that have brought improvements in the treatment of retinal diseases. Dr. Tieu will provide a brief overview of the retinal diseases and the latest, modern technology used to improve the lives of those patients.

    Learning Objectives:

    • Participants will gain knowledge of retinal diseases that can lead to low vision.
    • Participants will increase their knowledge on the modern technologies used in the treatments of retinal diseases.
    • Participants will be introduced to a new product designed by retina specialists that can help patients with low vision.

    • Dr. Brian Tieu

      Brian Tieu, M.D., Ph.D., Assistant Professor, is a board-certified Ophthalmologist and a vitreoretinal surgeon. Dr. Tieu is a dual graduate from the University of Texas Medical Branch where he simultaneously obtained his medical degree and doctorate in Biochemistry and Molecular Biology. After finishing his Ophthalmology Residency, also at the University of Texas Medical Branch, Dr. Tieu completed a two-year Vitreoretinal Surgical fellowship at UMMC. In 2016, Dr. Tieu began practicing at both UMMC and the G.V (Sonny) Montgomery VA Medical Center. In addition to his medical practice, Dr. Tieu performs translational research on the pathophysiology of retinal detachment and adhesion, mechanisms of traumatic ocular injury, and novel methods of suturing-in intraocular lens among other areas of scientific interest. Dr. Tieu has co-authored a textbook chapter on OCT Angiography of the Eye, published many peer-reviewed articles in renowned international journals, and has been invited to present at local, regional, and national conferences.
